An Lios - Gnome Ghome by Jessica Macbeth

The Journal of a Magical Garden

The Gnome Ghome

The Gnome Ghome is another example of the opportunistic building practices of faery. I had some spare good topsoil from clearing the driveway. They said, "Put it over here in a long heap - you can plant things in it." "Over here" was just around the corner from the An Lios meditation Garden on the north side of the first bit of the upper driveway. They were right - it was a good place to plant things and had more sun than most places on the land.

So, the dirt was put there in a "long heap." Of course, that was just the beginning.

There were "all these tree stumps" and Jon wanted to know where I wanted them. Some people thought they were useless and should be burned. The fae said, "How wasteful!" in shocked tones. Burn lovely gnarly roots? Not likely!

We thought about it a while - at least Jon and I did. The fae already knew what they wanted, and were just waiting for us to listen to them. We finally understood - plant the roots sideways in the "long heap" to make gnome ghomes. Tomas and Tommy-the-baby-backhoe carefully lined the roots up, trunks in the side of the long heap, and the result looks like this:

This is as far as we have gone at the moment. Later on, I am told, magical things will happen. Now, the fae and you and I all know that "real gnomes" will not live in the Gnome Ghomes. Real gnomes are spirit-energy beings in this world, and they don't need burrows. In their own world, the Otherworld, they are more tangible and already have homes. However, like many other fae, they often like to have "pretend homes" in this world - and where they do, the energy is just lovely. So, think "pretend Gnome Ghomes in a desirable neighborhood" here.

In actual fact, once I plant the right things there, it will make good homes for wrens, maybe squirrels, and definitely spiders. And others. And it will provide many niches and nooks for small sculptures, special stones, and other decorative additions. I'll add more pictures to this page as things happen in the Gnome Ghome neighborhood.
