An Urban Blessing Cairn, in Process

An Urban Blessing Cairn,<br />
in Process

When I first thought about building a blessing cairn, I wondered where—in my urban space—to put it. Although I live in a house, most of it is surrounded by cement patio or wooden decks. No wild spaces here! Fortunately, I realized I could create a sacred space—or blessing cairn—in a tiny bit of open earth, or even in a half-barrel or large planter. It really isn't the size of the cairn that makes it sacred, it's the intent. That realized, the building process began.

The only thing I knew for sure about my space is that I wanted water. Because I knew the faeries love birds, I decided a bird bath was just the ticket. After several trips to the garden store, I finally found a small stone bird bath—about one foot high—that I knew was the perfect one! Next, I went looking for a little garden sculpture—perhaps a squirrel or a bunny?? The faeries were most adamant that I NOT choose these! However, when my sister gave me a praying angel for my birthday, it was clear the beautiful angel was meant for my sacred space.

Next, I purchased some glass stones to make a set of runes. Although the glass was never meant to be part of my sacred space, the faeries definitely wanted those twinkly glass stones in the bird bath. In they went! And back I went to the store to buy more stones for my runes.

Although the pieces for my sacred space are coming together, it still isn't exactly clear where the space will be—and for that I'm just waiting and listening. But, even as I write these words, I'm hearing a voice say "Of course we know where we want it—it's going to go on your back deck!" So, another question settled.

Come back to this page in a week or so, and I'll have more on the progress of my urban sacred space.

I thought you might like seeing a picture of my inside sacred space - it's the top of my bookcase in my office. It's so peaceful every morning to come in and light the candle, see the flowers and hear the fountain, and meditate for a bit.

And, of course, the fairy girl makes it even better!
